iron chef

I cooked yesterday for my poker party. I didn't want a packaged party - chips, salsa and pizza. I wanted to make something, something yummy, something healthy. What did I make? A number of things I've never tried to make before and hoped that no one got food poisoning :)

1. Veggie platter
Easy enough. Cut up red/orange/yellow peppers, cucumbers, carrots and celery sticks. Throw some of that clubhouse powder stuff into mayo and voila!

2. Bruschetta
Hard to screw this one up. Cut bread, throw some shredded cheese, tomatoes, parsley and some olive oil, shove it in the oven and it's done

3. Chicken quesadilas
I've made this before so I couldn't have screwed this up. I was, however, intrigued when the top tortilla shell was starting to curl upwards (wtf?) in the oven .. oh well. The guys didn't complain so it was all good

4. Mango lassi
I bought mango puree, yogurt and milk. Then Nazia and Eliza took over and 10 minutes later we had mango lassi lol. 20 minutes later and the mango lassi was finished lol. Oh yea, who knew that mango puree was so damn hard to find? Only the brown stores seem to carry it.

5. Crabby cakes
Oh yea. Crabby cakes (makes me wanna say "Sponge Bob Square Pants!"). Eliza deserved most of the credit cuz she mixed all the stuff together; all I did was make them into little patties and throw them in the pan/oven. Who knew that crab meat was so expensive?!

6. Apple pie
Open box. Shove pie into oven. Remove 60 minutes later and top with ice cream ("I scream for ice cream, you scream for ice cream, we all scream for ice cream!"). Couples were supposed to share a piece - Maju ate it all. I was sad :(

7. Brownies
Who knew how easy it could be! Too bad we made it so late - by the time they were done, everyone was dead tired and itching to leave. I left my share on the counter overnight but daddy put it in the fridge! It's still un-hardening ..

Anyways I made things that I never thought I could make. I went all out and my feet paid the price - standing in the kitchen, shoveling food from the stove to plates. I could barely stand by the night's end - but it was worth seeing people enjoy the food (and not run to the bathroom). Thanks to Ewie, Nazia and Eliza for helping me not look like a dufus!

I feel like a hero
And you are my heroine
Do you know that your love
Is the sweetest sin?

And I feel a weakness coming on
Never felt so good to be so wrong
Had my heart on lockdown
And then you turn me around

And I feel like a newborn child
Every time I get a chance to see you smile
It's not complicated
I was so jaded

reflection

Over the weekend I found out that someone I knew in high school had passed away. Jon was a passenger of car that crashed in the early hours of the morning from what police say are an alcohol related accident. From what I can piece together from the newspaper articles, he died in hospital a few days after the accident.

Sometimes I read the newspaper online at work during breaks. I always click on articles that say 'accidents' and at the end of each article I have a tendency to shake my head and think 'aiya this is terrible'. Early last week I read about a crash that happened around town but names were never released so I didn't think much of it. This morning when I logged into FB a link caught my attention - it was a page regarding Jon's funeral. I clicked on it and read the details with mute silence. There was an attached e-newspaper link. It was from a different newspaper but the news was the same.

I met Jon in high school on the badminton team. He was this fun guy who loved to play and never ran out of energy. After I graduated I never kept in touch with him - he was just one of those people you meet who come and go in your life. We ended up finding each other on FB a few years later. I didn't know Jon very well but for what I do know of him, he was this exuberant young guy whose life had ended far too soon.

Jon T, Rest In Peace.

Roger Federer is going to be a daddy! I've loved watching Federer play over the years and screaming his name in front of the tv, but I'm genuinely happy that he's going to be a father :)

this is my corner

So after a bit of a hiatus I've decided to allocate some closet space in the world wide web to write (about mainly random) things.
